Food Photography: Strawberry “Dessert” (Fuji X100)

Tried a bit of food photography in my DIY lightbox. Couldn’t find a basket of pinterest-approved rustic veggies or a hipster-loved mason jar full of god knows what. Instead, I crumbled nilla wafers, sliced strawberries, and dolloped a few spoons of inexpensive canned whip cream. My backdrop was a wooden board found in the garage.

Not bad!

My New Citizen Watches – Fuji X100

My Christmas Presents from Livi

Livi always gets me amazing presents, but this year was very special. These watches are a perfect statement of the personal style I’ve crafted over the years: simple, timeless, and subtle. Can’t wait to see how the leather softens and molds into the shape of my wrists.

It Was A Dark And Snowy Night In Texas – Plano, Texas (Fuji X100)

Livi’s Mom: RANIER! RANIER! QUICK! IT’S SNOWING!

It is? In… Texas?

The first and last time I experienced snow was in 2000 at Angel’s Camp, CA. I was ten years old and the snow on the ground felt ten months old. It was hardened, like blocks of ice, but hey! I’m a Bay Area kid so I could care less! Snow angels, snowball fights, and snowmen, here I come!… Unfortunately, the snow was so stiff the snowball my oldest brother threw cracked the skin on my brother’s temple. He was pissed.

But this? This was wonderful. I never experienced falling snow so it was such a treat. I walked out with Livi’s mom, her brother, their dog Mila, and my dog Oso.

This shot blew my mind. I could actually see the snowflake shape on the tree stump. I had never seen it before. Maybe in art class cut out of binder paper, but not like this.

As I felt the gentle bodies of ice sleep softly on my cheek,  I was reminded of all the beauty and mystery of life.

Yup, This Is Definitely Texas: My First Day In Dallas (Fuji X100)

When Livi and I arrived in Dallas for the very first time I caught a glimpse of this cowboy right outside the airport. With a rush of hot air in my face and the sight of his camel toned outfit I thought, damn, I am in Texas.

One Last Time: My Last Trip To San Francisco (Fuji X100)

Before my permanent move to Texas I felt a duty festering deep in my soul to visit the city one last time. With my second-hand Fujifilm x100 and Polaroid Automatic Land Camera 360 in hand, I  spent hours walking around releasing any fears of separation at the tail end of the shutter sound.

These are my shots from the X100 in their full form, void of any image compression *cough*Facebook*cough* and commentary.

Ernesto: The Cowboy of Gilroy (Fuji X100)

For the past few weeks I’ve been itching to stuff my face with hot dogs and ice cream from the Sonic Drive In. Unfortunately, the closest location is 30 minutes south in Gilroy, a city so opposite of San Jose you might as well be in Texas.

After missing my exit I decided to adventure around and I came across this tagged up house with boarded windows and doors.
Bigger House

In the middle of my shooting, a large truck swung by. It crept closer and closer to my feet when suddenly a voice came out of the driver seat.

You takin’ pictures of my hoodie?

Ranier: Yea! Is that yours?
Ernesto: I put it up there.
R: What for?
E: I found it so I decided to put it on the pole. That way if they came back they could see it. I also put a face on it.

It was eerie; like a scarecrow to ward off humans.

R: Is this your farm? Do you work around here?
E: Not mine.

He pointed to the eyes hidden beneath those furrowed brows and said,

E: I watch for things. I see people, like you.
R: You been working here awhile?
E: 25 years
Reflection

E: Where do you live?
R: Born and raised in San Jose, you?
E: I live here. See that house? See the small one behind it? I used to live in that one 20 years ago.
Smaller House

R: What’s growing around here?
E: Right there is garlic
R: And across the street?
E: Romaine lettuce

Lettuce2
E: Here, I have something (he grabbed a bag from the bag seat and handed me a plump, green zucchini squash)
R: Oh wow! I can have it?
E: Yea! Oh wait, take this one instead. It’s better.
R: How do I cook it?
E: I don’t know, I have someone else do it for me. You just put it on the grill

Squash

We shook hands, he left in his truck, and I was left standing on a dirt road with two zucchini squash in my pockets. All I wanted to do was go home, cut the squash, and see how amazing it would taste with melted cheese. I wasn’t craving Sonic anymore.
